International Money Transfers in 2026: Limits, Timelines, Risks

Published on

Transferring money abroad from Ukraine remains one of the most pressing questions for those who have relocated, work remotely, or invest outside the country. Both individuals and businesses need legal, clear, and transparent tools for moving funds across borders.

There are several legal ways to make a money transfer from Ukraine to the EU. Let’s look at the limits, timelines, and typical reasons for delays for each one.

Method Limits and Timelines Typical Reasons for Delays
Cash Carrying cash without declaration — up to €10,000 per person; above this amount, written customs declaration is required. Risk of confiscation if undeclared; additional questions from border authorities about the source of the amount.
SWIFT Bank Transfer Limit depends on the bank and account type; processing time is usually 1–3 business days. AML/KYC compliance checks; requests for additional source-of-funds documents for large amounts.
SEPA (for euro transfers within the EU) No upper limit for most banks; processing time is up to 1 business day. Available only for accounts within the SEPA zone; requires a euro-denominated receiving account at an EU bank.

In summary: cash remains the simplest method for smaller amounts but carries the highest risk when crossing borders. Bank transfers are slower, but they let you confirm the source of funds immediately — which is critical for any amount that exceeds typical undocumented limits.

Which Method Suits Each Category of Sender?

How can you safely transfer hryvnias or dollars abroad? The right approach depends on your status as a sender.

  • For business owners

An SWIFT payment through a corporate account is the standard and most transparent option. The bank immediately sees Proof of Funds, transactions are tracked, and all the information needed for transparent accounting is available. If your amounts regularly exceed standard bank limits, it’s worth checking with your bank in advance about terms for large corporate transfers;

  • For individuals

For regular transfers covering ongoing needs (rent, education, family support), a SWIFT or SEPA bank transfer is the most predictable option — both give the bank a clear picture of the source of funds and don’t require additional explanations for repeat transactions. Large one-off transfers should be planned in advance, with supporting documents on the origin of the amount ready beforehand;

Whichever method you choose, always check the National Bank of Ukraine’s current currency restrictions, keep documents confirming the origin of your capital on hand, and use only legal, regulated financial instruments.

Why a Bank Might Block or Delay a Transfer

Even a fully legal transfer can be paused by a bank for additional review. The most common reasons:

  • The amount significantly exceeds the client’s usual transaction profile
  • No documented proof of the source of funds
  • The recipient is located in a jurisdiction with heightened financial monitoring
  • The payment purpose is unclear or doesn’t match the supporting documents

Preparing documents in advance — contracts, income statements, an explanation of the transfer’s purpose — significantly reduces the risk of delays or follow-up requests from the bank.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much cash can I carry without declaring it?
Up to €10,000 (or the equivalent in another currency) per person. Above this amount, a written customs declaration stating the source of funds is required.

How long does a SWIFT bank transfer take?
Usually 1–3 business days, depending on correspondent banks and compliance review workload. SEPA transfers within the EU are faster — typically up to one business day.

Why does the bank ask for source-of-funds documents even for a legal transfer?
This is a standard AML/KYC procedure required of banks in the EU and Ukraine. Any transfer that falls outside a client’s typical transaction profile gets reviewed, regardless of how transparent the origin of the funds actually is.

What should I do if my transfer gets blocked?
The bank will usually send a request for clarification — a contract, income statement, or explanation of the payment’s purpose. Responding promptly with a complete set of documents most often clears the block without further complications.
